Pahalgam is a small hill station resting at a height of 7200ft located 95km away from Srinagar. This place is popularly known as the “valley of shepherds” in Jammu and Kashmir. This beautiful place stands at the confluence of the Lidder River and Sheshnag Lake. Surrounded by the lush green pine forests and snow clad mountains, Pahalgam serves as the basecamp for the Amarnath Yatra. Completing the beauty of Pahalgam, Sonamarg is another magnificent place in Jammu and Kashmir. Resting at a height of 2740m above sea level, the literal meaning of this place is the “meadow of gold”. This hill station is a famous destination among the tourists because it is the basecamp for many famous treks in Kashmir including the Great lakes in Kashmir.

Pahalgam to Sonamarg

This five days’ trek from Pahalgam to Sonamarg will give you a glimpse of the scenic beauty of Kashmir. But despite of being a short trek, the route is very challenging which is suitable for people with a good physical health and stamina to walk through the tough terrains. July is the best time to witness the beauty of bloomed flowers spread across the valley and the meadows drenched with sunlight. Trek Itinerary

Day 1 : Trek from Pahalgam to Aru Village

The trek will start from the foothill of Pahalgam towards the Aru pasture which is situated 13kms away from the valley. Walking along the River Lidder for four to five hours, the trek will continue towards Tulian Peak above Pahalgam. On the way you will come across the beautiful sight of the pine groves. We will come across the mysterious pathway at Aru where the Lidder river vanishes underground at Gukhumb and reappears a while later. Aru is a small village overlooking the meadow where a stream emerging from the Kolahoi glacier transverses.


Day 2 : Aru - Nafran - 4.30 hours walk 3450 meters

From the Aru village, we will climb uphill to take a short walk above the Nafran River. Crossing the Nafran River we will reach the Nafran meadow which is the campsite for the night.


Day 3 : Nafran - Harbhagwan Lake

On the next day, we will climb the steep ascent to Harbhagwan pass to take a glimpse of the Harbhagwan Lake situated at the downhill track. As the day ends we will find a place near Nafran to set our camps for the night.


Day 4 : Nafran – Baltal 7 hours walk

Today we will walk towards the Baltal which can be reached by following the downhill. Just before reaching Baltal there will be a sideway which leads to the Amarnath Cave. We will set the camp at Baltal to spend the night.


Day 5 : Baltal – Sonamarg – Srinagar

As the trek will end today, we will head towards Sonamarg from Baltal. The trek towards Sonamarg is mostly easy unlike other days.
